Fixed orthodontic appliances are a common tool used to fix the abnormal alignment of teeth. However, these appliances have been associated with increasing a person’s risk sustaining tooth decay and periodontal diseases. This increased risks may be caused by fixed orthodontic appliances affecting the composition of the oral microbiome. I will use BLAST to study the compositional differences into oral microbiome of a person with fixed orthodontic appliances and without.
