Segmentation is the first process in object-based image analysis. The goal of segmentation is to identify the semantically significant constituents of an image. In the context of quantitative screening of parasites, segmentation is a crucial analytical step. In recent years, deep learning segmentation methods (DLSM) have gained popularity in computer vision. We present our research in applying and designing novel segmentation methods for quantitative screening of the S. mansoni parasite - one of the primary etiological agents of the neglected global disease schistosomiasis.
