Consumables and Costs:
Users provide their own cantilevers and other consumables. During training, standard cantilevers appropriate to the provided specimen and mode used are provided. Should a cantilever be used from the AFM facility’s stock, a flat rate of $25 will be charged. Users should research the type of cantilever needed for their application and specimen type prior to training and plan accordingly so that they can get started on data collection quickly after they have completed their training.
New Users:
- New users can arrange for training on instruments in the AFM suite by sending an email to the laboratory manager: Diana Mars (dmars@sfsu.edu)
- New user training is comprised of three two-hour training sessions on the Zeiss Inverted Fluorescence Stage or two two-hour sessions on the Stand Alone Stage.
- Training starts with examining known standard materials so that the user can focus on learning the operation of the instruments. If the new user has a research project in mind, then the last session is devoted to examining the research material (if sample preparation permits).
- Module training is an additional two-hour session at $80 per module only after the base training has been completed.
- New SFSU users may work weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until sufficiently skilled that they may be given permission by the laboratory manager to work in the evenings and on weekends.
- A refresher session ($45, 1 hour) is required if an operator has not used the AFM lab during the past six months.
Service work on any instrument takes priority at all times.
