Two biology faculty members receive SF State Distinguished Faculty Awards

Professor of Biology Zheng-Hui He and Associate Professor of Biology Christopher Moffat

At the 2019 University Opening Convocation on Aug. 22, five faculty and staff members were honored for their professional achievements and their contributions to the University community, including two faculty members from the Department of Biology.

Professor of Biology Zheng-Hui He received this year’s Excellence in Professional Achievement Award. He has served as a regular reviewer for various granting agencies, such as the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. He is currently the editor of a journal he helped found, Molecular Plant, which is now one of the leading journals dedicated to plant science. He has also procured $3.2 million in external funding, including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award.

Associate Professor of Biology Christopher Moffat received year’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Tenured Faculty. Moffat has mentored and trained a large number of students since arriving at SF State in 1998, close to 30% of whom are from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the sciences. Many went on to pursue Ph.Ds and have careers in science, a testament to Moffat’s mentoring skills.
